The main reason E85 allows for some much more power than traditional gasoline is that it has a very high octane rating, usually from around 100 to 105 octane, compared to 91 to 93 octane from normal gasoline. This high octane rating allows E85 to resist engine knock.
As already noted, flex fuel vehicles can use E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). E85 has an octane rating of 105, meaning that engines designed to run on E85 often have increased power when running it (although with decreased fuel mileage). And no, the 2GR-FE engine is not designed to run on E85.
I know there are E30 and E40 tunes when people mix 93 and E85 to get a higher octane to run more timing and boost. I currently have a 93 octane tune (Stage 3) from Stratified, I wanted to know if I could mix 87 octane and E85 to achieve 93 octane. According to a Ethanol calculator, it is possible: View attachment 355051
My DCR works out to 9.75:1 using Pat Kelley's old calculator and I am not even close to detonation limits of the fuel. Cranking compression was 235-243 psi last time I tested. I occasionally use N2O with E85 for enrichment on top of that, again, with no detonation.
Use these conversion factors to calculate the gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) of alternative fuels. These conversion factors help state and alternative fuel provider fleets report their compliance with Energy Policy Act (EPAct) requirements using the Alternative Compliance method.
E85 is a blended fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). When poor quality gasoline is used for blending, a tar-like sludge can build up in your fuel system (particularly on the injector nozzle). This tar-like sludge can also be attributed to improper storage, improper transfer, and water contamination of otherwise good quality E85.

The most common question about bottled octane boosters is how such a small dose can raise the octane of fuel by such a significant amount. The answer to this lies in the active ingredients. These octane boosters use anti-knock additives which, when added to the fuel, prevent the onset of knock (detonation or pre-ignition).
OCTANE is a measure of a fuel’s resistance to pre-ignition, pinging, and detonation. There are three octane ratings for motor fuels; Research Octane Number (RON), Motor Octane Number (MON), and the average of the two (R+M/2). Of these three ratings, MON is the most useful to
May 24, 2013 · The octane rating is a way of rating the fuels resistance to premature detonation or what is better known as "knock". The reason for the higher octane requirement is so that the engine can obtain it's maximum performance as designed. Most engines today have "knock" sensors which detect lower octane rated fuel and decrease engine timing to ...
Oct 27, 2011 · The problems with the race gas calculators is your going by octane numbers. E30 is estimated 93-95 octane. IMO it will suppress knock better than it's equivalent 93-95 octane std petrol fuels. Same with E85's 105 "rating". If your going to play with blends I think it would be a good idea to get an ethanol percentage meter on the return line.

May 14, 2012 · RON: Research Octane Number – Simply put, what your octane level is at 600 RPM. Pretty much meaningless in my book. MON: Motor Octane Number – Again, research based on variable timings at 900 RPM. (Moderate acceleration). This is the number I decided to concentrate on. Tests pretty much show that MON is usually around 10 points under RON.
Here is a handy calculator for determining octane with varying amounts of e85. If you start with 91 octane e10 and add two gallons of e85 you end up with 92.9 octane. This assumes a 15 gal. tank and a ratio of 13:2 e10:e85.

You might have 98 octane but in the UAE it is figured differently than ours. Your pump should list a RON number (the 98 octane) and a MON number (typically 86 to 90). RON is the Research octane number and MON is the Motor Octane Number. Our octane rating is figured by the R+M/2 method that is (RON) + (MON) divided by 2.
Dec 04, 2010 · The link to the calculator in the original post provides the answer. Basically if you first pump in 2.2 gal of e85 and then top off with 91 e10 you end up with e20 and 93 octane in the Mustang's 16 gallon tank. The state of Minnesota mandated several years ago that all gas be either e20 or e85.
E85 fuel dispenser at a regular gasoline station. E85 has an octane rating higher than that of regular gasoline's typical rating of 87, or premium gasoline's 91-93. So, if your 87 octane gas was selling at $3.50 per gallon, you would want to find the E85 at about $2.80 per gallon or lower. This is just from an "at the pump" analysis. When you get into the debates on added HP or negative affects on the motor, then things change.
Oct 06, 2017 · The stoichiometric ratio of E85 is 9.765. However, E85 is rarely the 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline mix it claims to be. For that reason, its stoich can fluctuate considerably. This makes Lamba a better tuning tool because it is not dependent on stoichiometric ratio.
Sunoco E85-R is an unleaded racing fuel containing 85 volume % ethanol. It can only be used in fuel systems designed specifically for E85 blends.
